Nix Calma (they/them) is a self-taught abstract expressionist, mixed-media artist with a BA in English from the University of Winnipeg (2012), and certificates in Therapeutic Art-Making, Modern Art & Ideas, and Design & Typography Fundamentals.

Their piece For Pancho was selected for an international contemporary art magazine, Artistonish (33rd issue) and Gallerium Art's The Book of Arts (Precious 2023) publication and exhibition. Their work Abstraction #1 was selected for an international online group exhibition Time 2023 and Curves 2023 (June 1, 2023 - July 31, 2023) through Exhibizone. Their work has also been featured in a solo online exhibition, 2023 Solos 10th International Solo Exhibition through Exhibizone.

Nix is a co-founder of Matter Queer Space Manitoba Inc., a 2SQTBIPOC-mandated art gallery, 2SQTBIPOC-mandated library, and 2SLGBTQIA+ community space which opened in December 2024. They work with new and emerging 2SQTBIPOC artists who face barriers to accessing opportunities in the art community, and through the Matter Art Gallery, give them a platform to exhibit their work, build a portfolio, provide artist talks/public presentations/workshops, and curate group exhibits.

Nix’s art is influenced by race, disability, gender, queerness/transness, fat politics, and sexuality. They are interested in the liminal spaces created by intersecting identities, and the displacement, erasure, and fetishization of racialized, queer/trans bodies.

Nix was born in a small town in Pampanga, northwest of Manila (Philippines). They were raised in Quezon City and moved to Turtle Island (colonially Canada) when they were 19. Nix is nonbinary, queer, brown, and a feminist killjoy (with thanks to Sara Ahmed).
